Vintage "Daphne and Apollo" Framed Artist's Proof by Harriet Zeitlin, Circa 1970s
Vintage "Daphne and Apollo" Framed Artist's Proof by Harriet Zeitlin, Circa 1970s. Harriet Zeitlin’s black and white print depicts the Greek myth of Daphne, a mountain nymph, becoming a laurel tree. This metamorphosis tale is based on Apollo’s unrequited affection for Daphne. Driven by cupid’s arrow, Apollo chases Daphne leaving her no choice but to seek refuge with her father who then transforms her into a laurel tree to avoid Apollo’s advances. In this work, The artist captures this moment mid-transformation as Daphne’s legs begin to root into the ground, her arms outstreched forming branches, Apollo scantily behind her. Professionally framed in an ebonized wood frame with gilt liner and mat. Hidden under the mat: Penciled in the lower left, “Artist’s Proof,” titled, “Daphne and Apollo” in the center and signed in the lower right hand corner, “Harriet Zeitlin.”
Harriet Zeitlin is a Philidelphia based painter, printmaker, quilt maker, sculptor and mixed media artist.
