Antique Folk Art Coquillage Tabletop Cabinet, Circa Early 20th Century
Antique Folk Art Coquillage Tabletop Cabinet, Circa Early 20th Century. Constructed from salvaged pine crates (with areas of partial branding visible on the interior) and finished in a reddish-brown stain likely intended to mimic a more luxurious wood like cherry. The face and two sides display geometric insets of natural shell collage set within a cement compound. The shells were likely collected locally by the maker of this piece. The chest incorporates three storage compartments, two with hinged doors and original brass hardware, and a single drawer with white porcelain knob. Silver radiator paint was also applied in areas within the interior, along the backs of the doors and edges of the shelves. Unsigned.
Condition: Great antique condition, minimal wear commensurate with age and use. Areas of surface finish variation and light wear as detailed in images. Five shells have been previously replaced, the four on the drawer, and two within the lower right diamond motif, but chosen to appropriately mimic the original shell types. A couple small natural grain splits along the wood surface panels, as shown.
Specs: 16 1/4" H | 12 3/4" W | 8 1/2" D
