Vintage Handmade Turtle Footstool with Spool Feet, Circa 1930s-40s
Vintage Handmade Turtle Footstool with Spool Feet, Circa 1930s-40s. Naively-constructed figural footstool in the style of a turtle. The maker hand-painted the surface a deep green with black linework for the shell scutes. Tiny nailheads were used for the eyes. Square-cut wood feet in the rear, the front two improvised later in life with the employment of discarded wool spools. Inscribed on the underside, “Ricky Lewis, Daddy Lewis, Mommy Lewis, RIP Whitty,” likely memorializing a pet turtle.
