Vintage Hand-Painted Carton Mobile by Paul Bechtold, Circa 1960s
Vintage Hand-Painted Carton Mobile by Paul Bechtold, Circa 1960s. Through non-traditional material use, Paul Bechtold employed five graduated cartons to create this folk art mobile. The artist added graphic, hand-painted mosaics to the sides along with charming renderings of bees and daisies. The ground of each is painted sage green with the yellow interior exposed through openings along the sides, allowing airflow to aid in movement while also adding visual depth to the piece. Connected using fishing line with a metal hook at the top for hanging. Unsigned.
Paul E. Bechtold of Long Island spent majority of his life in the skylight business, all while creating artwork behind the scenes largely constructed from excess and found material. He collaborated with Frank Lloyd Wright early in his career on the Usonian House, but his personal body of work was largely unknown.
Condition: Good vintage condition, paint loss throughout with discoloration accrued over time, wear commensurate with age and use.
