Vintage Folk Art Patrons of Husbandry "P of H Grange" Carved Voting Box, Circa 1930s-40s
Vintage Folk Art Patrons of Husbandry "P of H Grange" Carved Voting Box, Circa 1930s-40s. A voting tool used during elections for the Patrons of Husbandry, also know as the Grange. Its minimal design allows for votes to be cast by placing small dyed wool balls (black or natural) within a central hole. The hinged lid incorporates carved and painted details including a sheaf of wheat, and script that reads “P of H Grange.” Cleverly, the “o” in “of” also acts as the hole to cast a vote. Founded in 1867, the membership based organization pushed to advance methods of agriculture, as well as promotion of social and economic needs of farmers in the US. They still exist today, especially in rural communities across the country. Unsigned.
