Antique Victorian Taxidermy + Botanical Folding Screen with Fretwork Detail, Circa Late 19th Century
Antique Victorian Taxidermy + Botanical Folding Screen with Fretwork Detail, Circa Late 19th Century. A true oddity, this folding screen features delicate, preserved but partially degraded ferns, moss and hummingbirds encased within panels of glass. The birds have been arranged as if in mid-flight, alongside a singular butterfly. Designed during the Victorian period where use of taxidermy birds was the height of fashion, before environmental protections were put in place. The ebonized wood framework incorporates incised gold stripes across each rail. Fretwork panels adorn the base of each panel. Unsigned.
Presented at the Nameless Art + Design Show January 2026
Condition: Great antique condition considering the age and fragility. A singular crack is present along the backside of one glass panel. The wood frame presents areas of finish variation. The interior botanical and taxidermy components have somewhat degraded over time as photographed.
