Antique Folk Art Cerulean Blue-Painted Chair with Built-In Storage Box, Circa Early 20th Century
Antique Folk Art Cerulean Blue Painted Chair with Built-In Storage Box, Circa Early 20th Century. Constructed with spindles spanning from the back to both armrests, this piece is completely handmade, and likely of use of surplus material. The chair retains the majority of its original cerulean blue paint. The storage box portion (seat, side rails and base) is formed from heavyweight pine, similar to the weight used in early home/barn construction. Each square-cut leg continues through to the interior of the storage box, helping to reinforce the corners. The back rest and armrests show beautiful signs of wear, where you can see this was a well-used utilitarian piece. To access the hidden storage, the full top of the chair pivots along a pair of interior hinges. Remnants of an original latch are present with a small hanging skeleton key attached to a chain. The interior of the storage is plain, with small notations and areas of compass etching from the past. Perfect for use as an accent chair. Unsigned.
Condition: Excellent antique condition, wear commensurate with age and use. Areas of light surface abrasion and paint finish variation as shown. The body is strong with tight joints. We would recommend placing this chain against a wall, if daily use is expected, to retain the strength of the spindle back construction. One small leg chip, as detailed in images.
