Antique Exceptional Botanical Tramp Art Chest With Hidden Compartments, Circa 1870s
Antique Exceptional Botanical Tramp Art Chest With Hidden Compartments, Circa 1870s. A commanding example of folk art, this cabinet features carved botanical motifs applied on top of a wood base largely constructed of repurposed crates. A central, carved grille along the back is a striking detail. The base is comprised of 16 compartments (some cleverly disguised within trim detailing) with areas of visible crate paper labels throughout. The labels present are largely from laundry and soap packaging, leading us to believe this was likely created by a domestic worker who had access to scrap material. This elevated piece reads more as an altar rather than a traditional miniature dresser. The left and right sides of the chest reveal a tree-of-life motif with three extended branches, possibly representing the holy trinity. The top surface is covered in its original black coated canvas. Two upper shelves, with scalloped detailing hold a place of importance. Original white porcelain and vulcanite with mother of pearl inlay pulls are present. The chest also seems to have been cleverly designed for transport, with the back panel able to fully separate from the base. Unsigned. A singular paper label pasted within the central hinged door compartment reads “The Cooperative Society, Barnsley”
