Rare Monumental Vintage Italian Egidio Casagrande Hammered and Pierced Brass Vessel, Circa 1940s. A very rare find, this piece is especially large, incorporating cut outs, hammered and repoussé details. The work is inspired by Acanthus leaves, a motif often found in ancient Greek and Roman architecture. Five large leaves stretch upwards to form the bulbous body of the vessel, curling outwards at the top edge. Circular stud-like details towards the base and hammered veining details along the leaves add interest. Stamped on the underside of the base “E. Casagrande Borgo Valsugana Italy” with model number “408”. Made in Italy. Perfect for use as a large-scale vase or umbrella stand.

Egidio Casagrande (1911-1962) was born in Borgo Valsugana, Italy, in the northern province of Trento. As a teen, he apprenticed in the workshop of Luigi Taddei, specializing in the production of iron and copper. Egidio began producing his own works in copper and brass in the 1930s. His company grew and, at one point, had about a hundred workers and apprentices. Throughout his career, he made sculptures for public places and even worked to produce pieces for Hollywood films such as Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, and The Fall of the Roman Empire.

Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Natural surface finish variation. A couple areas of light surface scratching and green patination to the underside of the piece.
