Vintage Acrylic on Canvas Painting Depicting the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, Circa 1970s

$598.00

Vintage Acrylic on Canvas Painting Depicting the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, Circa 1970s. Depicted is the tragic scene where Sebastian is enduring persecution under the orders of the Roman emperor. Delivered in a subdued and sensual manner, Sebastian is tied to an ionic column, dressed in a loincloth, his body riddled with arrows. His halo (from martyrdom) seems to slowly appear. Rendered in cool blues, greys, greens and black. The artist chose to minimize the background detail, commanding the viewer to focus on the figure, his face filled with agony. Artist unknown.

Sebastian emerged as a patron saint during the Middle Ages with the onslaught of the Black Plague in Europe. He became a representation of resistance against illness due to his miraculous recovery from his initial persecution.

Now revered as a quintessential piece of gay iconography, imagery of Saint Sebastian came back into favor during the 18th century, enjoyed for its homoeroticism by gay and queer men. Then again during the late 20th century with the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Presented as part of our “Nameless Art + Design” Show collection, January 2025.

Condition: Great vintage condition, shows signs of wear and loss to painted surface (as pictured).
