Vintage Signed Barro Negro Clay Flutes by Doña Rosa, Circa 1970s

$68.00

Vintage Signed Barro Negro Clay Flutes by Doña Rosa, Circa 1970s. Hand-built with slight variations in scale and surface decoration, each flute has a unique diagonal scalloped appliqué motif. The top of each instrument has three keyholes and one on the underside. “Barro Negro” is a Mexican folk pottery making technique and style using black clay, becoming fully realized after firing. Signed “Doña Rosa SB Coyotepec, Oax Mex.” Rosa passed away in 1980 but her descendants continue to produce under her name.

Each flute offered individually. Five (5) pieces available.

“Doña Rosa discovered in the 1950s that she could change the color and shine of her ceramics using a technique still employed. She would polish it with a quartz stone before firing. This compresses the surface of the clay before it is completely dry. Then by firing at slightly lower temperature than normal, the result is a much more shinny surface. This tends to produce a more brittle pottery, so it is more ornamental than functional. She produced a wide variety of vessels and figures.” - https://donarosapottery.com/
