Antique Sailor-Made Lacquered Crochet Basket, Circa Early 20th Century. A detailed crochet form with matching lid, this piece was likely made by a sailor as a lover’s token. Intended use would have been as a sewing basket, with wax or lacquer added to the twine surface for structure and longevity. The top lid incorporates a scalloped edge and small central self handle. The interior base of the body and underside of lid are both lined in cotton. Artist unknown.

Condition: Great vintage condition with minimal surface wear and light surface finish variation. The piece presents a slight warp to one side, with a couple very small breaks within the lid’s crochet. Light water-staining to interior fabric liners. The top handle may have been re-attached early in its life.
