Antique Miniature Cut-Paper Silhouette Signed T B Gray, Circa 1866. The ancient art of paper-cutting, referred to as a “Scherenschnitte” - German for 'scissor cuts.’ This elaborate scene features two leafless trees looming over a game of chase involving two people, their hound, a retreating squirrel and a fleeing hare. The art of paper-cutting originated in the United States with German immigrants in Pennsylvania, as well as others who brought the craft with them from Europe. Original alligatored gilt frame. Signed “T B Gray Jan 1866,” etched within the black paper lower left. Artist Unknown.

Presented as part of our “Nameless Art + Design” Show collection, January 2025.

Condition: Excellent antique condition considering its age. Areas of light browning along the margins of the cream backing paper. Light curling to applied black paper silhouette. Areas of rubbing and gilt loss to frame as photographed.
