Vintage Oil on Board Seascape Painting by Robert P Lawrence, Circa 1941. A large body of placid water fills the foreground with a strip of low, verdant land in the background stretching across the painting. Two thirds of the work feature large cumulus clouds looming low, reflecting the pinkish hues from the sunset. Signed “Robert P Lawrence” on the lower left side. Dated “Aug 6 ‘41” with remnants of the original “R.H. Macy & Co.” retailer’s label on the verso. Presented in its original wood frame with gesso detailing.
Robert Pearson Lawrence was born April 26, 1883 in Setauket, New York . After attending private schools and short stint serving in the Army Infantry, Lawrence pursued an education in the arts. First attending Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, followed by the Art Students League in New York City and the Woodstock colony in the Catskills.
Lawrence led a career as an illustrator for magazines, including the old "Life Magazine" and "Women's Home Companion.” In 1914 he executed the frontispiece illustration for S.R. Crockett's novel "Sandy,” which is signed "R. Pearson Lawrence."
CONDITION: Great vintage condition, surface presents a yellowed surface sheen from age (as pictured). Could be professionally restored, if desired.
